Have you tried ViewVC (formerly, ViewCVS)? It does provide bonsai-like query
interface, as far as I understand. I have not personally installed it or
used it (the bonsai interface, I mean... I use ViewCVS without it). But I
think it does provide the capability for both CVS and Subversion.
