I was like you when I first found myself dealing with branches, but
believe me, once you get past the initial "god help me" stage,
branches will be a lot less error prone than maintaining something
like you describe on the trunk. I'd suggest you try to find a smaller
set of content that you can use for testing branches and see how you
find it.
