svn co - error on OS X 10.4.8

Subversion command-line client, version 1.4.2.

When I try the following command on Linux, it works just fine. When I
run the exact same command on OS X, I get the subsequent error.

$ svn co svn://host/repo/test
svn: Can't copy 'test/.svn/tmp/text-base/test.svn-base' to
'test/.svn/tmp/test.tmp.tmp': No such file or directory

I got the same error with version 1.2.3 which was installed via Fink. I
removed Fink's and rebuilt 1.4.2 from source
but still the same problem. Is there a known problem with Fink+svn?

The problem doesn't appear to be any corruption. I've started a
completely new repo, added a fresh directory and checkout still causes
the same problem.

I'm not sure where to go from here.
