I think the best solution is using the script hot_backup

http://subversion.tigris.org/tools_contrib.html#hot_backup_py

It is a wrapper around the svnadmin hotcopy that performs addistional
checking of already existing old backups with renalming of the new one
and optionally removing of the old copies
