When I purchased Visual Studio 2005 a few months ago, VSS was an optional
item I could get. I suspect little if anything was fixed or added. It was
probably just the same product in a different box.

VSS uses a merge on commit model, which can be exceedingly dangerous. You
don't know if the code you check in actually works until you check it back
out again.

It was available for a considerable surcharge as part of VS2005 Enterprise.
It includes more functionality, and seemed like a combination of a VCS,
issue tracker, and white board. If you need the additional features you
could also use Subversion plus Trac. I wouldn't rule out Team System, but
research it fully to see if it addresses your issues with Subversion
without introducing new problems.

For more on VSS, you could also look at Microsoft's sourcesafe newsgroups.
