Early versions of Macintosh xcode/Interface Builder had a similar
issue. I used to get around it by moving the .svn folder out of the
directory to somewhere else and then moving it back again whenever I
needed to do a subversion operation.
There was a feature request to have a property that would mark a
folder and its contents as "opaque" so that Subversion would treat it
as a single object but there was never much interest from the
developers in getting it implemented, and then Apple fixed xcode.
