Check out Mulberry:

<http://www.mulberrymail.com/>

It recently went free, and should be going open source soon. (The author is
disentangling proprietary libraries used when it was commercial to make
this possible.) Binaries are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The novel thing related to this subject is the Reply dialog. The attached
image illustrates how you can select the recipients, which header they'll
be in in the reply, what part of the message to quote, and whether to
create a reply (with cross reference) or start a new message. (The latter
is useful if you have a list folder open and want to start a new thread.
Just reply to an existing thread and select Create New in the recipient
dialog to remove the references header.)
