I am running gentoo linux...
During tests I have found that the hang occurs more often when using svn
protocol than using file... However when using windows (tortoise) it is
more often than not that it hangs and sends tortoise locking up windows
until you kill the process (using task manager)

What OS are you running on?
(I doubt that it's a virtual issue. We run our SVN server in a Xen
guest domain under Linux, but we use ssh+svn to access it rather then
using the svnserve daemon.)
