"This client is too old to work with working copy" message

I had client version version 1.2.1 (r15230) and server the same version.

I had done merge before, but i got the message:

svn: This client is too old to work with working copy '.'; please get
a newer Subversion client

I updated my client to 1.4, which solved. But shouldn't be compatible,
been the same version?
