Yes I did. And yes I have. The only reason I started getting the latest versions of stuff was because it failed.
Will it be easier if I start again and post the error I get from the distro?

Did you install the install the subversion-deps tarball also? It takes cares of all the dependancies. Read the INSTALL file in the subversion package.

I've tried loads of things, just, obviously not the right thing.
I ran ./configure --with-apr=../apr-1.2.7 --with-apr-util=../apr-util-1.2.7 --with-expat=../expat-2.0.0
having exhausted efforts with the bundled versions too.
