Thanks for the overwhelming responses!

BTW, I indeed wanted to "check out" a single file.
I was aware of the other commands but they're NOT
what I wanted.

I guess if I had not used CVS or Clearcase before
this would be ok to comprehend why, but I have. And
it both tools, one CAN check out just a file. I'll
just chalk this as one of Subversion's intended
shortcomings and live with it.
