John, you're most welcome. You might have noticed that I have recently posted a couple of questions here, and have received some helpful replies in return. I've enjoyed trying to give something back...

We had Apache for a time, but switched to svnserve, partly due to the speed.

Working copies do take a while to be created here too, even with svnserve. I haven't timed it recently, but I'd guess it's about 10-15 minutes. [That's plenty of time to make a big, strong pot of coffee.]

However, once you have a couple of working copies checked out, an update is pretty quick (probably a few seconds to a minute), because, if I understand correctly, only the delta is transmitted from the repository.

Rob.

OK Rob

Let me just specify that when giving the number of files of the
project I was not scared about the disk space (I agree it is cheap)
but about the time it takes to create a working copy. From the early
tests I made with lots of files it took quite a long time to get my
3000 file working copy ready to be worked on. Now I don't know...
maybe the server machine wasn't powerful enough (PIII with not much
RAM), and maybe I should have used the quick SVN server instead of
going the Apache way (I had to go this way at the time because SVN
server wasn't supporting per directory access rights and this feature
is really important to us).

Thanks again, your comments are very valuable
