Most antivirus programs have the option of disabling scans on specific
file types and directories. We just disable virus scans on our WC
directories, so we retain protection on the rest of the system. Very
few of our versioned files are executable anyway, and they get scanned
as soon as they are copied to another directory.

    We also find that disabling the "Indexing Service" in the WC
folders or disk helps a lot, via the right-click "Properties" menu, in
the dialog presented by the "Advanced..." button.
