What version are you using? This may have been fixed recently -- I
can't recreate it on trunk. The working copy does gets locked on the
failed update, but cleanup and then re-updating works.

I'm not sure the working copy should even be locked (and I'll try to
investigate it when I can) but at least a full re-checkout is not
required.
