There is no inherent problem with subversion running on a NIS client.
I an runnning both subversion server (Solaris) and subversion clients
(Linux) on NIS clients, and they work fine.

There maybe some problem with your NIS, but that would affect other
things too.

I wish svnserve had PAM support like CVS pserver does, but that's
another matter.
