renaming a module without need for complete checkout possible?

Hi,

say I have a directory with lots of data in it and I need to rename it.
I can do this easily with svn, but this process deletes everything in the
old directory and does a complete checkout for the whole (though only
renamed) directory afterwards.

Is there a workaround for this if I want to avoid this (in some cases
quite long) process.
