BDB 4.3 problem with SVN 1.2.3; dump and load?

So I found http://subversion.tigris.org/faq.html#bdb43-upgrade which
describes how to fix the problem that I've been getting since upgrading
to Subversion 1.2.3 with BDB 4.3 on my Debian Testing machine.

Unfortunately, I can't revert to an older version on this same machine;
when I try to, apt says it has installed v1.1.4, but svn --version says
it is still 1.2.3. I even ran apt-get clean to purge out the packages
and redownloaded them. Something is weird, and I will double-check that
the Stable packages are what they say they are.

I have a second machine running Debian Stable which now has 1.1.4 and
BDB 4.2 (which is doubly weird because it installed from the same
package repository. The question is, how do I move the backup to the
older machine to do the dump, then move it back to the new machine?
Apparently I am supposed to use hotcopy to move from one machine to
another, but I wonder if it will cause a problem since my repository is
not compatible with the BDB version on my Testing machine.

I obviously don't want to lose the repository, but I am not too familiar
with svn administration. I just setup a repository and assumed that it
wouldn't be a problem from one version of svn to another. Reading
through the posts on this list, I see that FSFS would be ideal at
helping to prevent such problems in the future. In the meantime, of
course, I would like to be able to do a dump without worrying that my
repository would get corrupted.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
