Probleme mit grossen Files (svn import und svn add)

I have encountered problems with Subversion and large files.
The svn import does not work for files larger than some 10 MB. The import
blocks and have to be manually aborted.
Adding the files manually with svn add and commit, increases this size to
20 MB or so. But it is very slow and apparently not linear depending on the
size. 1 MB takes 30 seconds. 10 MB takes 15 minutes and 25 MB virtually
never complete.
We are using Berkley DB. What could the reasons be? Are there any known
limitations of Subversion? Could it be due to limitations in our network?

With friendly regards
