Again, it's close. However, this could be a very good solution. How do I
find out what state it is in?

I think the goal of Subversion is to track changes to files. Directory
versioning is a bonus over CVS, but without being able to selectively
checkout at the file level, the tool is incomplete. It forces users to set
directory structure to match Subversion capability rather than by
categorical preference.
