Thank you Si and Ryan,

That clears most everything up. For archival purposes, here is what I
think I have learned and will use:

USB repository/backup
=====================
 (.) Store the latest svn client installer for all platforms (same
major version).
 (.) Create an FSFS repository using the lowest minor version (highest patch).
 (.) Checkout to any machine using that machine's own client.
 (.) For backup on USB drive: export or dump rather than checkout/update.
