Thanks for your response (and those of the others on the forum). There was a 'clear authentication cache' on the TortoiseSVN (which i realise is a different project), that i had to click to get rolling.

Hint: you'll get better responses if you show the actual contents of
the conf file, and a literal transcript of the behavior you're seeing,
contrasted with what you expect. More details, more verbosity. The
above is a good summary with which to start your question, but it's
not enough detail to actually help you.
