THAT's what the problem is!!! Ok, it all makes sense, now. I'm using the
VS version of TSvn, so it uses _svn instead. Damn... That sucks. Has
anyone come up with a way around this? (I know that should be directed
to the TSvn list, but I figured I'd ask here, while I'm on the subject.)

You do get this message if you try to update a directory that is not a
working copy. This one get me every time after I import a dir into svn.
Importing a plain directory tree doesn't make it into a working copy of
course :-)

Do you have a .svn dir in the current directory?
