I replied off-line earlier though I meant to CC the list... I ran into
this sort of message (with http, that is) and it appeared to be
truncated data caused by timeout, and the timeout was caused by the
client running ridiculously slowly because of disk drive problems (I/O
retries).

Retrying the operation with another client (assuming the network is
ok) may help. Also, in my case using svnserve let the operation
complete (in 5 hours rather than the 20 minutes it took when I tried
good hardware).
