Subversion installation -- on local workstation too?

Hello,

We're planning to install Subversion very soon on a Unix RedHat
server. The users' development machines include Windows, Mac, and Solaris.

Does Subversion also need to be installed on every user's workstation, or
just on the server? A task I supported in the past installed it on each
workstation as well as on the server, but the repository was on the server.

Why would Subversion also need to be installed on the users'
workstations? If it makes any difference we will also download either
TortoiseSVN or RapidSVN, depending on the developer's OS.
