svn and ant

running an ant script,
 I delete a directory
  .... trunk/documentation
the generate content in it using the ant script.

when I try to commit this, svn gets upset.
 I have to delete the directory, update, then generate files
 which overwrite the directory contents.

I can then commit OK.

Is there anyway round this please?
svn add trunk/documentation fails too.
