Backups. Yes. Very good idea. Also, be sure to do a practice restore once in a while to be sure your backups are accurate. There's nothing worse than discovering that the past year of your backups are useless.

And just to throw my hat into the Linux filesystem fray, I run Slackware at home, using whatever version of ReiserFS they default to, and it's been running great for a year. Of course, I don't run a high volume source control database at home, just a low volume Tivo HMO server. ;)

Some of the uber-nerds I know swear by XFS, which excels in cases where you have lots of files and many transactions. It's very solid and has been around (at least internally to SGI) for a long time.
