Tags and branches

I am really starting to miss being able to tag a revision number
across my repository with a text identifier (for a beta release, for
example). I know you can create a branch and all coping is lazy so
it doesn't take up space, but this is not true for backups (svnadmin
dump). All the branches seem to be stored multiple times in the
backup file (my backup file doubles when I do a branch).

Am I doing something wrong or thinking about this wrong? I need to
do almost weekly "tags" of my builds. I've gotten to the point where
I am just writing down numbers, but this seems wrong.
