Current git (as of 0.99.4 about 5 days ago) will put symlinks in the
repository without problems. cogito is still ignorant to symlinks.
However, git can be used in conjunction with cogito. I currently have
repositories that track symlinks.

This is a bold statement. ;-) git is still rapidly progressing. The
features have not yet been nailed down. If I'm not yet mistaken, they
don't yet claim that development has stabilized enough for general use.
Sure, subversion will win over a lot of 6 month old projects. I will
reserve judgement for a little while.
