Error on first commit

I have a project that I checked out of my subversion repository. I've
made some changes to it, and now I'd like to commit them. When I try, I
get the following errors:

        svn: error: cannot set LC_ALL locale
        svn: error: environment variable LANG is en_US
        svn: error: please check that your locale name is correct

How can I correct these errors and continue?
