Whats in your apache error Log? if it is something like
apache2: dl-close.c:365: _dl_close: Assertion `imap->l_type == lt_loaded ||

I moved from mod_auth_pam to Kerb5 to work around these glibc / pam/
auth_pam / Apache issues.
