ldaps hangs httpd

From: Richard Stingel <STINGEL_at_gwm.sc.edu>

I've successfully been able to authenticate against
our ldap server via ldap:// for accessing our subversion server.

When I change it to ldaps:// I receive the login prompt, but
it then causes apache to churn and consume cpu and doesn't do anything
else.

It doesn't send any packets to the ldap server so I'm guessing there's
a config or package problem in apache.

Has anyone seen/solved this issue?
Is there a good way to debug to see where it's actually hanging?

Thanks,
Richard
