Just a few WAGs:
- Are you sure your server is up? (Try browsing to it if you expose
with apache).
- Are you by any chance trying to commit from a working copy that was
checked out from a different server URI that what you presently have
running? (did your server's name change)
- Is your DNS system working?

A little bit more detail [exact command syntax, for example] is always
helpful too...

No, I waited at least 10 minutes, and the commit was only a couple of
files.
Does the delay depend on the size of the working copy, the size of the
repository, or the size of the commit? I'm assuming it's the last one.
