Feature suggestion

I've spent some time on Perforce, and discovered an interesting
feature with its 'checkouts'. Basically, it's only telling other users
you are working on a file, without any locking. This sounds
interesting to avoid multiple similar mods to the same file, and could
increase communication between developpers.

I'm quite unsure with such a thing in SVN, because it would modify the
way one works with it, by adding more operations in order to edit a
file. What do you think about it ?
