I think the reason for the resistance is in your own words above:
"... when committing it to a revision control system ..."

IMHO, the more svn sticks to the task of revision control, the better.

Providing hooks for people to accomplish *other objectives* in an
integrated/automated way is "nice", but not essential.

Hopefully, solid-reliable-version-control is the primary focus -
and hopefully it will remain so.
