We also have an Apache 1 proxy in front of Apache 2. Short-circuiting
the proxy solves the problem.

That's the second time we're bitten by the proxy (the first was the
unability to "svn rename" a file without a "502 Bad Gateway").

We plan to drop that feature :-(
