As a "pro-label", I believe that this compromise will satisfy 99 % of
my needs.
Just for fun: darcs (http://www.darcs.net/) has almost the opposite
problem. Changeset identifiers are only strings. Numbers could be
useful (http://bugs.darcs.net//index.html?q=368).
