Can I remove .svn/{README.txt, empty-file}?

Is possible to remove the .svn/{README.txt, empty-file} files?
I'm in need of some free inodes (and disk space) and these files are pretty
useless: README.txt should be in /usr/share/docs/subversion and empty-file
can be replaced by /dev/null.

I see in the mailing list archives that someone was about to remove
README.txt. Why did you decide to keep it?
