svn update & svn commit

Hi, i'm a newbie in subversion
I've read the book. In chapter 1 -> A Quick Start, it
is written there that we should do svn diff, svn
commit then svn update. My question is why don't we do
the svn update first then if there's no conflict we do
the svn commit?
I hope someone can give me an explanation about this.
