When edited on an external editor, the log comment is bracketed (or,
more properly, finished) by this:

--This line, and those below, will be ignored--

I think the commit code won't recognize the bracket text if it doesn't
start on a new line, i.e., you cannot do:

 This is my log comment. --This line, and those below, will be ignored--

so it is hard to see how would the user keep the newline from being
there at the first place.
