Anyone running squid for read caching?

From: K. Richard Pixley <rich_at_noir.com>

If I have an http based repository on the far side of a very slow,
laggy, intermittent network connection, will running squid on my side help?

I'm looking for a way to provide caching access for read data such that
it doesn't necessarily need to go over the wire, while write accesses
still do. Is anyone running a configuration like this? Does it help much?
