subversion web server performance

Has anyone tried using subversion directly as a web server?

In config, I set *.html with svn:mime-type text/html, and now through apache I
can interact with my repository as if it were my actual website: this is
convenient for testing stuff, but how would it perform as a real-world web
server? Would it be possible to have an application server interpret requests to
the repository?

Thanks,
