Yes, I too desire the type of behavior you describe, Sams. Though, as
far as I'm aware and as Geoff said, it doesn't work like that.

Also, in the past, there were some trouble (bugs) with non-recursive
checkouts and I don't recall seeing the discussed and fixed on the dev
mailing list so I've been keeping away from it (though maybe that
trouble was fixed; I don't have time at the moment to research the
mailing list threads describing the problems, etc).
