Sure, this works assuming that the user double-clicks the file from
windows explorer.

But what if the user runs MS Word, then does File->Open?

Or what if some power-user opens a command prompt and runs "winword.exe
file.doc"?

In this case, windows explorer isn't even *aware* that a file got
opened.
