I faced this problem too and solved it like this (as example):

$SVNLOOK log -t "$TXN" "$REPOS" | grep "[a-zA-Z0-9]" > /dev/null || ERROR=1
if [ $ERROR = 1 ]; then
   echo "Please provide a log entry!" >&2
   exit 1
fi
