The first problem to overcome is that you haven't gotten us to understand
exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish, so our suggestions aren't
much use.

Now I *think* what you mean, from piecing together what you've said, is that
you want to do a serious revision of the code base, by starting from an
older revision, doing some new and different (from the ones that have been
done to it already) modifications, and then making that the HEAD version.

Is that right, or exactly what is it that do you want to do?
