How to avoid merging binary files..

Hi,
I've found in Subversion documentation that locking is the worst thing in
SCM yes it true until you work with sources but how to avoid of merging Word
documents without locking mechanism? Have you got any ideas how to be sure
that only one person modify Word using Subversion repository?
