missing files/directories after checkout

Every time that I do a checkout of a large repository, there are files that
do not seem to get placed into my working copy. As a workaround,
performing an update directly after the checkout results in those files now
being placed in my working copy. It would be nice if I didn't have to
perform the update to get everything. Has anyone else run into this
problem?
