How to preserve access rights?

Hi,

I try to store configuration files in Subversion Repository. But I
found out, that Subversion does not preserve access rights. The check
in of my /etc works fine, but when I check the directory out, the
shadow file is world readable.

Is there any way to tell Subversion to preserve the access rights?
Maybe in some kind of property information?
