See, this would be a case where the design/usability isn't very good.
Yes, it's documented properly, but that "--quiet" and "--verbose" don't
just cancel each other out is completely unexpected.

If the time ever comes that replacing/aliasing these is appropriate, one
might consider "--no-messages" and "--show-paths".

Ah well, hindsight is 20/20, it's easier to criticize than create, and
all that...
