externals usage help

Hello

I am looking for some help/hand holding with the externals/propset
commands.

What I am needing to do is "pull" specific header files from say
/common/linux/header.h
depending on which project under say /linux/foo/build/ is pulled.

Where can I go to get a good understanding of creating links when a repo
is checked out.
